ADDRESSING CURRENT CHALLENGES EMERGING FROM THE PANDEMIC
עבודתם של מורי/ות העברית מושפעת כמו על רבים מאיתנו מהתפשטות נגיף הקורונה. במהלך עבודתינו השוטפת עם בתי ספר ומורים/ות, זיהינו שלושה תחומים משמעותיים הזקוקים לתגובה:
- הוראת מיומנויות הקריאה והכתיבה ללומדים/ות חדשים/ות בכיתות ג-ח המצטרפים/ות לכיתות בהן הלומדים/ות כבר רכשו קריאה וכתיבה
- הוראת מבדלת/מותאמת בכיתות בהן אין חלוקה לרמה אוריינית כפי שהייתה בעבר
- תמיכה בבריאות הפיזית והנפשית של המורים/ות
בעקבות זיהוי אתגרים אלה, צוות ״עברית במרכז״ מציע שלושה מפגשים וירוטואלים חינמיים לקהילת המורים /ות הרחבה כשכל אחד מהמפגשים יענה לאחד הנושאים שזוהו כמאתגרים.

The work of Hebrew educators, as for all of us, has been and continues to be greatly impacted by the virus. Through our work with the field, HATC has identified three specific areas of challenge that are being surfaced by the field:
- Tools for teachers to accelerate Hebrew literacy of incoming upper-elementary & middle school graders with limited Hebrew background
- Providing conceptual and practical tools in differentiated instruction as many teachers find themselves teaching multi-level classes
- Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of Hebrew teachers and leaders during these challenging times, reflective of the unique situation of many in this constituency
As such, HATC has created and fully-subsidized three virtual workshops open to the field, each addressing one of challenges noted above.
NOTE: All sessions will be recorded and available for viewing at a later date; by registering for the live session, participants are agreeing to be recorded for these purposes.

Addressing the mental health of your Hebrew teachers is a vital component of their teaching success, especially during this fluid time. It is normal for teachers to feel like it is just “too much”. The question is how best can you provide support.
We invite you to join us in a workshop, designed for Hebrew leaders, that will equip participants with information and practical tools on how to recognize and manage anxiety. The workshop will be led by Tal Gale, HATC Senior Program Officer, and Shiry Zamir, M.A. LLPC, Director of Learning Support & School Counselor at Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School, and doctoral candidate. This session will be conducted in Hebrew.

בסמינר מקוון זה נציג דרכים וחומרי הוראה לתמיכה בהוראת העברית לתלמידים המגיעים לבתי ספר בגילאי יסודי וחטיבת ביניים ללא חשיפה קודמת לשפה, תופעה שאליה אנו עדים לאחרונה יותר ויותר בבתי הספר היהודיים. האתגר שתופעה זו מציבה בפני מנהלי המחלקות הוא באיתור מורים מיומנים בהנחלת השפה ללומדים בכיתות ג’ ומעלה. ומבחינת המורים האתגר הוא באיתור חומרי הוראה פדגוגיים מתאימים, שכיום מוצעים בעיקר עבור תלמידי יסודי צעירים יותר או כאלה שמתחילים את לימודיהם בתיכון היהודי.
In this webinar we will present methods and materials to support Hebrew instruction for students who arrive in day schools in the upper elementary and middle school years without prior experience learning the language, a recent phenomenon which we are increasingly witnessing in Jewish days schools. The two-fold challenge facing the teachers is: 1) acquiring the necessary skill set to develop reading and writing skills in grades 3 and up, and 2) locating appropriate pedagogical materials, which largely cater to a different audience, such as younger elementary students or those in transition years like year one of high school. This workshop will be led by Liat Kadosh, HATC Director of Embedded Expertise, and Dr. Rina Kreitman. Second Language Acquisition Specialist in the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland.

בהוראה מותאמת/ מבדלת אנו מבחינים בארבע אסטרטגיות כדי להתאים את ההוראה ללומדים: התאמת תכנים, תהליכים, תוצרים וסביבה לימודית. במציאות המשתנה שנחתה עלינו בעקבות מגפת הקורונה נוסף אתגר נוסף. כיתות העברית שהיו מובנות על פי רמה אוריינית נדרשו לשנות את המבנה וברוב בתי הספר כיום מורים/ות לעברית מלמדים/ות כיתות הטרוגניות יותר מתמיד. במפגש נשוחח עם מורים מקצועיים מהשדה החינוכי וביחד נדון באסטרטגיות השונות כדי להתמודד עם האתגרים בכלל והאתגרים כיום.
There are four ways to differentiate instruction. Teachers can differentiate instruction through content, process, product, and learning environment. The changing reality due to COVID-19 has added more challenges to differentiated instruction as many classes are not divided by proficiency levels. Join us for a learning session where we will hear from professionals in the field and share ideas and strategies.

Did you know that you can enhance Hebrew Student Proficiency through digital game-based learning and gamification? Join us for a series of 3 interactive workshops on the pedagogy of gamification in the teaching of Hebrew language and culture in any learning environment. The series will include discussion on basic principles of gamification, learning how to leverage gaming in your teaching and the opportunity to build a game using the Ji TAP website. This series will be facilitated by Mira Angrist, HATC Director of Professional Learning, and Anat Goodman, Ji Vice President of Education.

As we move into the second half of this academic year, our Hebrew classes continue to look and feel very different. This course will provide you with updated conceptual and practical tools to equip you in using digital pedagogy in virtual, hybrid or modified in-person modalities. Through the integration of technology in second language instruction, using the Proficiency Approach, you will be able to maximize Hebrew learning and enhance your learners’ communicative performance. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the basic principles of the Proficiency Approach for teaching Hebrew
- Adapt a variety of online tools to different learning objectives
- Advance your learners to a higher level of proficiency
- Create meaningful online content for your classes
This online course and independent study consists of 8 75-minute workshops

Cost: $4,000 for up to 10 teachers; $6,000 for up to 18 teachers
- Visual Literacy in Teaching Hebrew Language and Culture. This is an online course consisting of 6 75-minute sessions online for your Hebrew faculty. Assignments will be given in between sessions. This option includes one 1-hour pre-series meeting and one 1-hour post-series reflection meeting with Hebrew and/or school leadership. Cost: $3,600 for up to 10 teachers; $5,600 for up to 18 teachers
- Virtual workshop series for your entire Hebrew faculty. This option consists of 4 60-minute workshops: one 1-hour pre-series meeting, one 1-hour during PD meeting and one 1-hour post-series reflection meeting with Hebrew and/or school leadership. Cost: $2,875. Topics can include, but are not limited to:
- Distance Hebrew Teaching and Learning
- Differentiated Teaching and Learning in a Myriad of Settings
- Understanding and Supporting LD Hebrew Students
- Formative Assessment – Assessing Process and Product
- Project and Community Based Language Learning (PBLL/CBLL)
- Building Curricular Units Based on the HATC Model
- Introduction to Proficiency-Based Instruction and Learning
- Moving Students from Achievement-Based Learning Towards Performance/Proficiency-Based Learning
