At the center of our day school work are YOU, the dedicated Hebrew teachers, more often than not the de facto Israel education department and the living connection between Israel and the day schools’ students, teachers, and staff. This heinous attack on Israel has impacted us all; we know that for many of our Hebrew teaching colleagues in the field, you must manage how this has impacted you personally while taking on the difficult task of helping your students understand what is happening. It is a tremendously difficult task. As we ourselves go through this same challenge, we will work to provide you with helpful resources in Hebrew and English. If you develop resources that you find are impactful, please send them to Nili at nilip@hebrewatthecenter.org so we can help distribute them to others.

In this initial session we discussed challenges and shared suggestions for class activities as well as ways to speak with the students and the school community about the situation in Israel.

Session 2 – October 12, 2023
At the session, we shared ways of supporting you, ways to help you deal with the situation personally, and suggestions on how to explain the situation to our students with the guidance of the psychologist Dr. Siggie Cohen. We also shared suggestions for lesson plans and activities for students of different ages and at different proficiency levels.

Session 3 – November 8, 2023
In this session, we discussed the challenges schools which recently received students from Israel are facing, and specifically, the role of the Hebrew teachers in this context. We shared a variety of paths of action, strategies from Hebrew leaders and social emotional considerations from an expert.

During this session, we came together to recognize you for your important work during this time, to have the chance to care for one another, and to share educational resources in Hebrew for the classroom and the school. This event featured special guest speakers and presenters, and included separate break-out sessions for teachers ranging from preschool through high school.
Materials that were mentioned in the session, and that can be used in the Hebrew classroom in general, including activities that are appropriate for the current situation.

Suggestions for active involvement of young and mature students

Send letters to the UN, to the US president, to your representative in congress demanding the immediate release of children and youth from captivity.
- Send support letters, videos, and drawings to Israeli-based Natal psychologists, social workers, and counselors who volunteer to provide counseling services to displaced Israelis facing significant psychological trauma. Click here for instructions.
- Send a letter or drawing to the National Library of Israel, who will send it to Israeli soldiers/citizens/kids to raise their spirits and also preserve it in their collections.
Plan lessons to prepare students to draft, edit, and perfect appropriate letters, in Hebrew, to Israeli soldiers and displaced Israeli children.
- Send letters/emails to students Israeli relatives
Write support posts in Hebrew and in English.
Join your local community gatherings and create posters to show support for Israel.

Zoom Gatherings for Youth from Israel and Around the World
A message from Inbal Barel (Gottsman), Director of the Hebrew Department in the Department of Hebrew and Culture of the World Zionist Organization
Greetings, in view of the security situation in Israel, we have decided to initiate Zoom gatherings between Israeli youth and youth from the Diaspora. The meetings are designed to connect Jewish youth from around the world, and are an opportunity for an open discussion about the situation in Israel. During the meetings, the Israeli students will share stories, thoughts and personal feelings regarding the war, in a friendly and sensitive atmosphere. Diaspora students will be invited to ask questions, and will be able to understand closely what is happening in Israel. The meetings will be conducted in Hebrew and English, through appropriate facilitation that will combine the two languages. The meetings are intended for teenagers in grades 7-12, but students and adults from the diaspora can certainly be invited to them as well.

הודעה מענבל בראל (גוטסמן) מנהלת תחום העברית במחלקה לעברית ולתרבות ההסתדרות הציונית העולמית
שלום וברכה, לנוכח המצב הבטחוני בישראל, החלטנו ליזום מפגשי זום בין בני נוער ישראלים ובני נוער מהתפוצות. המפגשים נועדו לחבר בין בני הנוער היהודים מרחבי העולם, ומהווים הזדמנות לשיח פתוח על המצב בישראל. במהלך המפגשים, התלמידים הישראלים ישתפו בסיפורים, מחשבות ורגשות אישיים לנוכח המלחמה, באווירה ידידותית ורגישה. תלמידי התפוצות יוזמנו לשאול שאלות, ויוכלו להבין מקרוב את המתרחש בארץ. המפגשים יתנהלו בעברית ובאנגלית, באמצעות הנחיה מתאימה אשר תשלב בין שתי השפות. המפגשים מיועדים לבני נוער בכיתות ז-יב, אבל ניתן בהחלט להזמין אליהם גם סטודנטים ומבוגרים מהתפוצות.

The school system in Israel is closed for at least the next 48 hours. Teachers in Israel have their own worries and cannot focus. We, the Hebrew speaking community abroad, can help by engaging children’s minds and hearts. The online school called, שאגת אריה, “Sha’agat Arieh”, the Lion’s Roar, is in need of Hebrew speaking teachers who can teach in all subjects, grade levels pre-K-12.
