Over fifty Hebrew teachers and leaders participated in a complimentary workshop on December 6, 2022 that looked at Hebrew and Israeli culture through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Takeaways included guiding principles to make educated selections of authentic materials related to Israeli culture and society, insights on instructional practices, and protocols to facilitate meaningful discussions about social issues concerning DEI.
In partnership with Hebrew College, Hebrew at the Center is now offering a six-session weekly online course beginning Monday, February 13, 8:00-9:30 PM Eastern. The course goes deeper into the topic and provides Hebrew language instructors and department heads a collection of theory, skills, and practices that can raise their students’ awareness toward issues of personal and collective identity that impact their local Jewish communities and Israeli society, using Hebrew language. 6-PART COURSE INFORMATION AND REGISTRATION

heading off to Jewish summer camp to infuse camp life with Hebrew

Hebrew must have been on the minds of many as December unfolded, with Tablet Magazine posting an article on the current state of Hebrew education and an exchange of ideas about Hebrew and Jewish summer camping captured within the eJewish Philanthropy discourse. We invite you to read these articles and think about ways in which Hebrew advances the Jewish educational and communal agenda as the community prepares for 2023.

Publicly recognizing accomplishments will motivate more students to aspire to higher levels of proficiency and provide parents and school leaders with the opportunity to celebrate Hebrew language learning excellence. The Heseg ceremony recognizes all middle and high school students who have received the Global Seal of Biliteracy in Hebrew, awarded based on demonstrating the level intermediate-mid or higher level of Hebrew proficiency in all four language skills (reading, writing, oral comprehension, and speaking), as measured by the AVANT language assessment, Heseg also celebrates each student's personal Hebrew instructor and school. View the 2022 Heseg Scroll of Honor.
Join us for this wonderful gathering and celebrate these students, their teachers, and their schools as we also celebrate the birthdays of Hebrew language pioneer, Eliezer Ben Yehuda, and HATC Founder and Board President, Arnee R. WInshall. We also invite you to recognize individual student's achievement
or celebrate Arnee's or Eliezier Ben Yehuda's birthday via a targeted donation to Hebrew at the Center.

Baltimore's Krieger Schechter Day School
Celebrates 30 Years of Hebrew Musicals

Students at Kreiger Schechter Day School 2022 performance of Kanar Al Hagag in Hebrew, presented both at the Baltimore JCC's Gordon Center & Jerusalem's Chantal Caray Center
|
For three decades, a high point of the Krieger Schechter Day School’s Hebrew program has been the eighth grade Hebrew musical, the focal point of language learning that provides participants a fun and engaging capstone experience. Initiated thirty-one years ago by the founding Hebrew department chair Dafna Tasch, with the first play directed by Amy-Jo Shapiro, these performances have also inspired countless grades of younger students to improve their Hebrew so they, too, can fully participate when their time arrives. Last year, the play traveled with the eighth graders on their Israel trip; the 8th grade students from KSDS were honored to present selections from "Knar Al Hagag" (Fiddler on the Roof) at the "Chantal Caray Center" in Jerusalem and share their experience with the President of Israel, Isaac Herzog, who shared his excitement about this approach to Hebrew.
This year the tradition celebrates its 30th year with a production of "Sippur Haparvarim" - West Side Story - in January, followed by a mini performance in Jerusalem scheduled for May when this year’s eighth grade travels to Israel. Ofir Ben-Ari, a theater director based in Tel Aviv, is in residence at Krieger to work with the cast and direct the show. Ben-Ari works for an organization called the Tarbut Movement that leverages arts and education to build social resilience. Tarbut sent Ben-Ari to KSDS as a shlicha (emissary) to work on the play. This collaborative effort involves the World Zionist Organization, MAKOM, the Tarbut Movement, and JNF-USA, enabling an Israeli artist to work abroad with students yearning to deepen their Hebrew language skills and connect with Israel. “The KSDS 8th Grade all-Hebrew musical provides students with a lifelong attachment to the everyday, real, lived language of their tradition as the dialogue and lyrics remain part of their memory and their identity, as KSDS alumni and as proud modern Jews,” shared Dr. Robyn Blum, Principal of KSDS.
As a part of this year’s event in January, a group of educators, school leaders, artists, and community leaders from a range of schools and communities in North America will attend the performance and then gather the morning after to participate in a dialogue being facilitated by Hebrew at the Center CEO Rabbi Andrew Ergas. The goal of the discussion will be to think about how this type of approach to Hebrew language education and art can be elevated and expanded to many communities, creating a network of educators who can share knowledge, expertise, and materials. By integrating the arts, collaborative performance, and Hebrew, this type of innovative approach can bring transformative change to the role of Hebrew in the lives of students, their families, and the community.
